Who we are

BEN KEELEY BVM&S CertSAS DipECVS MRCVS

European & RCVS Recognised Specialist in Surgery (Orthopaedics)

Ben graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh in 2001. He started his career at Beechwood Veterinary Hospital, a busy small animal referral centre in South Yorkshire, where he developed a particular interest in both orthopaedic and spinal surgery. Under the guidance of his mentors he worked towards achieving the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery, Ben was awarded the qualification in 2005. Keen to continue his postgraduate studies he subsequently moved to Ireland to complete a European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) Residency in Small Animal Surgery at University College Dublin. During his time there he was fortunate enough to collaborate with the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland (RCSI), studying the effect of reduced bone quality on implant holding. Following four years of advanced training Ben gained the ECVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (2008) and he has been an RCVS and European Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) since 2009 (www.rcvs.org.uk/education/specialist-status).

Ben joined Northwest Surgeons, Cheshire in 2008, being appointed as a Director in 2013. Whilst at the hospital he continued to develop a particular interest in total joint replacement, complex fracture management and spinal surgery, combining a busy clinical schedule with ongoing research. Ben has authored and co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presenting his work at both national and international meetings. His main areas of interest include the use of external skeletal fixation, techniques for joint reconstruction and the prevention of surgical site infection. The latter has become a significant focus of attention over recent years, Ben founding and chairing the Infection Control Unit at Northwest Surgeons. He regularly provides continuing education courses for the veterinary profession in addition to participating in advisory panels.

Ben and Steve have been colleagues for several years and when the opportunity to open Manchester Veterinary Specialists arose they accepted without hesitation and with great enthusiasm. Together they form a strong team, providing both experience and specialist training with a strong desire to provide the highest possible standards of care.
