Anaesthesia and Analgesia
Overview
All patients are treated as individuals to ensure that care is tailored to meet their needs. We have a full suite of monitoring equipment to ensure that physiological parameters are maintained within normal limits during anaesthesia and sedation, promoting a fast recovery from anaesthesia and surgery. Optimising perioperative pain management is a key goal, to ensure that animals have, as far as possible, a pain-free experience while undergoing treatment with us.
Pain Management Clinics are available here at MVS and suitable for patients with nerve or muscular pathologies. Although drug-based therapies are important, with a medication plan being formed at the initial consultation, we often utilise multiple modalities (e.g. acupuncture) to treat a patient’s pain and to improve their quality of life.
The benefits of the Specialist-led anaesthesia service at MVS are:
- A Specialist in anaesthesia oversees that our standards at MVS are as high as possible
- Use of advanced monitoring equipment such as direct arterial blood pressure measurement where appropriate
- Routine use of local and regional anaesthetic techniques using ultrasound guidance
- Use of complex multimodal analgesia techniques involving systemic and local analgesia
- Tailoring of analgesia based on the demands of each patient.
